Our April Newsletter

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Please join us in recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Throughout April, we will be posting content on social media about the prevalence of sexual assault in our communities and ways we can all work together to end it. Join us for our various programs throughout the month to stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault.

Staff Spotlight: Ash Mullis

1. Who are you, what do you do at PH, and where are you from? My name is Ash Mullis and I'm the Underserved Outreach Coordinator at Project Horizon. I grew up in Lexington and moved back this past December after attending the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg VA.

2. What led you to Lexington and the work you do now? My experience in college made me really value my upbringing in Lexington. I think rural communities like Rockbridge County often get overlooked by young people deciding where to live post-college because they're not "exciting," but I've learned to appreciate how cool it is that we kind of have to make our own fun here. I love living in nature & I love working in my own community. More than anything, I think what drew me to this work was my love for the people here & my passion for rural community-building.

3. What’s the best part of your job? The best part of my job is getting to work with so many incredible community members in a way that I've never done before. As a kid growing up here, I definitely took so much for granted & didn't think too much about all of the work that goes into making Lexington/Rockbridge a safer, happier, more equitable place. It's been an honor to be in these spaces where that work is taking place.

4. What’s something most people don’t know about you? Some people probably do know this, but I'm a musician! I've been playing guitar since I was 9 and singing for my whole life, and just started playing bass this year as well. I recently had the opportunity to record at a studio in Knoxville, TN & I'm hoping to put out my first album by the end of 2022.
